5 Ideas To Beat The Heat This Summer
If you are from New Zealand, which is where I am, you will have been hit with a record breaking month of heat this January.
It has been unbearably hot and if you haven’t heard, Fanageddon has hit! We are a small country, so when it gets this hot, and everyone runs to the shops to buy fans, naturally they sell out nation wide! We are also in the midst of our summer school holidays, so here is 5 ideas to beat the heat this summer.
#1. SWIMMING (OF COURSE)
The vast majority of New Zealanders live close to the coast – so I can not say enough for a trip to the beach for not only swimming, but also a much welcome sea breeze! Don’t forget to wear your jandles though, because that sand can get hot enough to burn your feet!
If you can’t make it to the beach, or you’ve already been to the beach, then the next place to hit up is definitely the pool – whether its your local swimming pool, you know some lucky bastard that has a pool in their backyard, or you get a local school pool key – pools are where its at.
And don’t forget the River! Depending on how old your kids are, or how swift/deep your local river is – the river is another great option, and there is usually heaps of shade to be found – you will probably have to share this option with your local doggos though.
#2. NO AMOUNT OF ICECREAM IS TOO MUCH ICECREAM
I kind of go no holds barred over icecream when it gets this hot, icecream for breakfast, icecream for lunch, icecream for dinner? OK.
We haven’t really been eating much of anything real in this heat – one of our favourite any time of the day meals for this hot weather – waffles with golden syrup, icecream and chocolate sauce – NO HOLDS BARRED I SAID!
Our other fave frozen treats are frozen banana, frozen berries, frozen peas and frozen yogurt bites (just put yogurt into an icecube or mini muffin tray)
#3. BACKYARD FUN
Anything that involves getting wet, water fights, hose fights, running through the sprinkler, slip and slides, water balloons, sit in a bucket, this weather could provide the ultimate excuse to give the ice bucket challenge a go!
If you are doing your own mini pool or paddling pool at home – here is my supreme paddling pool tip – get a chlorine tablet and floating tablet holder from somewhere like the Warehouse or Para Rubber and leave it floating in the paddling pool, when you’re not using it, once or twice a week. This keeps the water clean for AGES, so you’re not having to clean it out all the time – just beware of grass and pee – cos that’s all in there 100% guaranteed.
#4. GO TO THE MOVIES
Seems like such a waste to sit inside when its a beautiful day outside, but sometimes too much sun becomes a real problem, and its lovely to just sit in the dark for awhile and relax, plus air-conditioning baby!
#5. HEAD TO THE MALL
Again for the air conditioning – do a spot of window shopping, hit up the food court and stock up on watermelon, cucumber and MORE ICECREAM at the supermarket.
